Valentine’s Day can be a lot of fun in the classroom, but it can also be a great opportunity to reconnect with students and work on building community and spreading kindness. Explicit instruction on how to be kind to one another, respect ourselves, and encourage each other is crucial. I don’t think we can assume students know how to do these things effectively. So, Valentine’s Day provides an opportunity to do just that! Writing activities and discussion prompts are a great place to start.
My favorite resource, Valentine Writing Activities, is centered around 3 key words: Kind, caring and respectful.
Included in this resource:
- 24 writing prompts
- 7 writing activities
- 8 writing papers
- 9 Top 10 Lists
- 3 “friendly letter” designs
- 3 “letter to my future self” designs
- 3 ”compliment card” designs
- 2 sets of posters/bulletin board headers (both in B&W and color)
I have designed this resource to be used during the days/weeks leading up to and following Valentine’s Day in order to promote a positive classroom community. There are 3 core words (KIND, CARING, RESPECTFUL) that this resource focuses on. There are plenty of discussion/writing prompts to get you going and the more talking your kids do, the better their writing will be.
Many of these activities can easily be adapted to other times of the year as well. There are a variety of display options!
In addition, leading by example is the perfect way to encourage a positive classroom and school community. Let your colleagues know you appreciate them with a quick note or small gift and let the students see you doing it!
Celebrating Valentine’s Day in the classroom can be the opportunity to reaffirm class rules, review procedures, celebrate our positive traits, compliment one another, and build a sense of community. I hope you have the chance to spread some kindness in your school soon!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
